There is something for the whole family here at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The Miramar Air Show

With strong military roots, the La Jolla area provides one of the greatest airshows throughout the country. During the weekend of September 22nd through the 24th, over 100 hundred military and civilian performers will take to the sky to demonstrate their incredible ability and that of their planes. The show reaches a crescendo with the awe-inspiring maneuvers of the United States Navy’s Blue Angels. And it does not hurt that many of these craft will be speeding along the Pacific Ocean. Find it at the Marine Corps Base in Miramar just a couple miles inland from La Jolla.

Celebrate Independence Day with These Top Things to do in La Jolla!

As one of the top neighborhoods in “America’s Finest City” (which refers to San Diego, in case you were curious), La Jolla has its own fireworks display that competes with the best of San Diego’s other suburbs.

The free event involves a fireworks show in La Jolla Cove that takes place from 8:00pm until 10:00pm on the night of July 4th, with fireworks being launched at 9:00pm. An insider tip: get a spot at nearby Ellen Browning Scripps Park early, as it enjoys the best views of the spectacle. If you get there early enough, you can even enjoy snorkeling and scuba diving in La Jolla Cove itself, then treat yourself to one of the stunning sunset views that the area is famous for.

Leading up to the fireworks, you can also enjoy the San Diego County Fair at Del Mar Fairgrounds nearby to the north, which has traditional carnival-style amusement and thrill rides. You can also head south and take the ferry to Coronado to enjoy a 10:00am Independence Day parade and a 4:00pm concert in Spreckels Park during the day.

Alternatively, Escondido is having its own Independence Day festival at the California Center for the Arts, while nearby Poway celebrates the holiday with an all-day event themed around old-fashioned, turn of the twentieth century amusements.

Another option for a spectacular fireworks display in the area is the famous Big Bay Boom in North San Diego Bay. One of the largest fireworks displays in the country, this amazing display can be seen from just about any town along the San Diego Bay, making it an ideal choice if you happen to be hanging out in downtown San Diego or in the Gaslamp Quarter as the 9:00pm celebration begins.
