If you put your car in neutral on this uphill street, you will find that your car will roll up the hill instead of backwards! While weird and rare, this phenomenon known as a gravity hill does occur in other locations besides La Jolla. But, since you’re visiting, you might as well experience it for yourself!
Sunny Jim Cave
Are you ready to experience a secret location that can only be accessed through a small gift shop? Visit Sunny Jim Cave. This cave is not out in the open; you can only get to it through a concealed opening in the gift shop Lulumars Jewelry Boutique at 1325 Coast Blvd. There is even a sign on the building that refers to the store as “The Cave Store.” This cave is a manmade tunnel that leads to a one of the most spectacular views of the Pacific Coast! There is an admission fee to go through the cave, but it is very affordable and so worth it to have this unique experience. Sunny Jim Cave is definitely one of the best off the beaten path spots in La Jolla!
Underwater Cemetery
About 100 yards from the La Jolla Cove Bridge Club and 35 feet underwater lies what is locally referred to as the “Tombstones.” This is an underwater cemetery dedicated to spear lfishermen, divers, and others that have died in these waters. While there aren’t any remains, there are markers. The tradition of “marking” the location of these underwater deaths started in the 1940s and continues to this day. If you are into the macabre, or simply curious, check this place out.
